How to Set Up Social Distancing for Teams Bowling in Two Shifts (Split Team or Pair Bowling Options)

When setting up social distancing in BLS-2025, you can either use the Split Team/Split Shift option or the Pair Bowling, Split Shift option, depending on how you want to divide each team.

Split Team/Split Shift Option:

This setup allows each team to have some members bowl in one shift while the rest bowl in a second shift, while staying in traditional lane fashion. For example, teams 1 through 10 would stay on their assigned lanes, but the first two players bowl during the first shift and the remaining players bowl during the second shift.
Steps to Configure:
  1. Open BLS-2025 and Open the League.
  2. From the main menu, click Setup > League > Lane Assignments.
  3. On the right side of the Lane Assignments grid, click the Social Distancing tab.
  4. Select Extended Pair:
    • Add Lanes: The league will be spread across all lanes as needed.
    • Add Shifts: Select this to split the league into shifts (first and second shift for each team).
  5. The lane assignment screen will keep the normal lane numbers, but the automatic scoring export and recaps will display the pairings correctly.
Advantage:
  • This option allows teams to bowl in alternating lanes, keeping a competitive environment, while each shift consists of fewer bowlers.

Pair Bowling, Split Shift Option:

This option splits the league into two shifts based on lane pairs. For example, teams 1-10 would bowl on 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, etc., with odd teams bowling first in the early shift, followed by even teams in the second shift.
Steps to Configure:
  1. Open BLS-2025 and Open the League.
  2. From the main menu, click Setup > League > Lane Assignments.
  3. On the right side of the Lane Assignments grid, click the Social Distancing tab.
  4. Select Pair Bowling, Split Shift:
    • Add Lanes: The league will use all lanes available.
    • Add Shifts: Choose this to split the league into early and late shifts.
  5. The lane assignment screen will keep the regular lane numbers, but the automatic scoring export and recaps will show the split shift pairings appropriately.
Advantages:
  • This setup allows traditional pair mode bowling.
  • USBC rules currently allow sanctioned leagues to use this format.
  • Lane size is not a limiting factor for implementing this rule.
Disadvantage:
  • Second shift may experience more challenging lane conditions unless the center redresses the lanes between shifts.

General Notes:

  • When configuring either option, BLS-2025 will display the appropriate lane pairings in the automatic scoring export and recaps, ensuring that teams bowl under the same set of conditions while adhering to social distancing requirements.
  • Choose Split Team/Split Shift if you want each team to bowl in two shifts while keeping alternating lanes, or Pair Bowling, Split Shift if teams can be split across different shifts in separate pairs.
These setups help ensure safety while maintaining the competitive integrity of the league.
