How to Fix Team Handicaps Changing Mid-Series

If you notice that the team handicap changes during a series, it could be due to several reasons. Here’s how to identify and fix the issue:

Reasons for Handicap Change Mid-Series:

  1. Player Change During the Series:
    • If you substitute a different player during the series, it will change the team average or combined handicap.
  2. Player's Average Changes:
    • This can happen if a bowler is just establishing an average or has been using a book average and it changes during the week. Make sure to check if the bowler's average has changed.
  3. Opposite Team Average Changes:
    • If your league uses the "difference between team averages" method of handicap, an average change for a bowler on the opposite team can also affect the handicap calculation.

Example Scenario:

  • Week 5 Setup:
    • John A: 12 games - 125 avg.
    • Jane B: 12 games - 145 avg.
    • Jim C: 12 games - 165 avg.
    • Jerry D: 2 games - 145 avg. (Jerry missed his first game)
  • In Week 5, Jerry’s average of 145 is incorrect because he only has 2 games bowled. The league rules require 3 games to establish an average.
  • After entering the scores for the first game of Week 5, Jerry now has 3 games, and his average changes to reflect the true 3-game average.

Steps to Fix the Issue:

  1. Override Jerry's Average:
    • Go back to the week where Jerry bowled only 2 games.
    • Use the override screen to adjust his average to reflect the correct 3-game average.
This will stabilize the team average and prevent unexpected handicap changes during the series. Always make sure that averages are properly updated and overridden where necessary to avoid discrepancies in handicap calculations.
