Controlled Access Folder and installation

During installation, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1317. An error occurred while attempting to create the directory
Or the installation may get interrupted.

Or that it shows in the Event Viewer Logs.

Resolution
This error is caused by a security feature introduced in Windows 10 (1803) and later as well as Windows 11.  The intention is to prevent malware from overwriting your personal files.

To solve the problem:

  1. Select Start  > Settings  > Update & Security  > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.

  2. Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.

  3. Under Controlled folder access, select Manage Controlled folder access.

  4. Switch the Controlled folder access setting to Off.

  5. Install BLS-2024

  6. If you wish, you can repeat steps 1-4 to enable the setting

You may need to give an exclusion to the installer to successfully install without doing the above. You also may need to add the BLS2024.EXE as well.

  1. Open the Windows Security app by searching the start menu for Security.

  2. Select the Virus & threat protection tile (or the shield icon on the left menu bar) and then select Manage ransomware protection.

  3. Under the Controlled folder access section, select Allow an app through Controlled folder access

  4. Select Add an allowed app and follow the prompts to add apps.  Add the BLS2024INSTALLER.EXE app and then add the c:\Program Files (x86)\BLS-2024\BLS2024.EXE application.
