BLS-2015, Division help needed, we call them brackets
Idea shared by Renee Wills - August 16, 2014 at 8:38 PM
Under Consideration
Our league is a bracket league (ya'll call them divisions). Each week 4 bowlers of simular average bowl each other for prize money. We start with the top average and divide the bowlers into groups of four all the way to the lowest average. Can this be added to a future update?

I had been working with this customer via Facebook and admittedly was confused with her understanding of the term "Brackets". It's better known as divisions for her instance.

What she would like to be able to do is to have BLS be able to put bowlers into divisions based on current averages, in divisions that contain four bowlers each (no more, no less). Now that she knows what the divisions term means, she can create the divisions, but as of now would have to manually assign them.

Divisions can be set to be based on current average in BLS, but the average ranges have to be themselves set manually. She wants to have four in each division based on average, not have to manually change the average parameters each week in order to get BLS to be able to do this automatically.

The "adjust team rosters" screen can be set to display a list of all bowlers, but there is no option to sort that list by current average (True Average), which would be ideal as she could go down the list and assign divisions manually quite easily that way. I spent some time looking around to see if there was an easy solution...there is not, at least as far as I could tell. She'd have to take a printed copy of the standings with an average list of bowlers and then determine divisions based on that before manually assigning. So the ability to sort by true average would be helpful here.

So...one solution would be able to sort bowlers by current (true) average in the list of league bowlers (the true average can be displayed, it just isn't a sort option, as they can be sorted by team/lane number, first/last name, but not much more. One could then manually assign divisions fairly easily on that screen.

The other solution would be to be able to specify the number of bowlers per division, sorted by current average, thus making the entire procedure automatic.

She would, once bowlers are assigned to divisions for the current week, include "high series with handicap by division" in the standings sheet from which she could assign winnings for that and each particular week, which is her end goal.

I know it took me a lot to describe this, but I just wanted to make sure that what she's looking for is clear.

Thanks for the explanation Frank.  This helps clearly explain Renee's request.

This is something we would have to also consider for future versions as well as weigh against how many others could benefit from the work necessary to implement compared to work on other feature requests.

I do have a suggestion to Renee, and while this does involve a minor change to the rules regarding Brackets (Divisions), this might make things more workable administratively.

If the league(s) were to agree (would have to be unanimous after the season starts), why not do the Brackets (Divisions) on a quarterly basis? That is, set the brackets based on book average and use the same brackets for the first quarter of the season regardless of anyone's change in average or ranking. Then at the end of the first quarter, re-assess rankings and re-assign brackets. This would be result in less changing...the bowlers within the same bracket would know whom they were up against for a number of weeks instead of having it based on a fluctuating average (particularly if two or more players were close in average and at the cusp of a bracket). It's just a thought, but it could simplify things.

Yes, that kind of change would definately take a league vote. Im not sure that will pass but can at least bring it before the bowlers.
I will check with the other 3 leagues at our center also They may be using another program now that handles this. I may be the only one still using the excel spread sheet we all shared and manually transferring the info from bls to.
