TBrac 2006 Will not open in Windows 10
Problem reported by Melissa Riccardi - December 22, 2016 at 3:42 PM
Not A Problem
My computer recently updated to Windows 10 and it will not open Tbrac 2006. It gives me an error that says Runtime Error 217 at 0043BEAE. I have tried to put it in compatibility mode, but it just will not work. It gives you that error and the program closes. Is anything being done to make this program compatible with the new windows versions?

I only use Windows 7, but today I have access to a relative's Windows 10 machine and am posting from that.

You may need to re-select a default printer within the Windows 10 Control Panel. This machine did originally come with Win8, but did not have T-Brac2006 on it until after Win10 was installed. The Win10 upgrade may have done something with the recognition of a default printer, something I know that CDE's products check on launch.

I was able to download, install, and launch T-Brac2006 onto this machine. While I did not go through the registration process for this install, the launch was fully successful. As I don't have tournament files, I can't test anything regarding program function, but I can launch without any error message.

The version downloaded was 3.57.02. Your submission did not mention a version number.

I would at least suggest visiting the downloads page at CDE Software's website and doing a fresh download and installing from that download and see how things go.

After giving this a second look, I will put my hunch on the issue with a default printer.

I've known of printers whose manufacturers have refused to issue Windows 10 drivers for certain (older?) products. Either that, or just needing to download and install a Windows 10 driver from the manufacturer's website, may very well fix things here.

How did I arrive at this? I went to the Knowledge Base link above and put the words "error 217" in the search field and a host of items appears. While TBrac-2006 isn't among those products specifically mentioned, the fact that so many others  (many years of BLS and BTM) each having the issue of "no default printer" among them leads me to believe that this may be your case.

CDE products need printer drivers in order to generate preview screens, even if you never actually print anything, to be able to display results and reports on screen.

As Frank notated - a 217 error usually indicates a default printer was not indicated in Windows.  There was an issue in Windows 10 where an update to Windows 10 "knocked out" the setting to which printer was the default printer, which then requires you to manually go in and designate the printer you want to be the default printer.
